 You’re Not Multitasking, You’re Switching

Are you the one who likes to do all tasks at the same time? Are we really doing multitasking? Is our attention 100% on doing all the tasks?

The scientist said that human attention is limited. We can really focus on one thing at a time. It means our focus change from one activity to another activity. We never do the same activities at the same time, we are switching. For example, when we are driving, our focus will be on driving. While the phone ringing, our focus changes into the call. We can do both activities at a time, but not to our focus because it switches from one to another.
Our attention only focus on one thing at a time. And that thing is what we are process in a lot of detail and become aware of–Dan Simons
David Strayer, a researcher researched a man who often doing multitasking. Petrus Venter, the CEO of a company believes that he is a great multitasker. His family said that he can do some activities goodly at a time. He can do driving while replying to emails, eating, and doing all other activities at the same time.
David Strayer researched how Petrus Venter focused on doing some activities at a time. The test needs Petrus Venter to drive with some distraction on the road while answering the basic question that his wife asked.
The result of this research is Petrus Venter was just the same as 98% of another multitasker. His ability to drive was good. But it's getting worst when he was on the phone.
So, how this research influence our life?
While doing some work, it's better to not do some activities at the same time. Our brain only focuses on one thing at a time. When the brain already focuses on a thing, the others got blurry.
Just like the research with Petrus Venter driving while calling will danger us as a driver. When we already focus on the phone, we don’t pay attention to other things like the pedestrian, other cars, traffic lights, etc. This thing could danger us and the people around us.

It's good to focus on one thing so you can focus 100% on it. After finishing one task, then you can be moved to another task. So you will be better at finishing the task! This also helps you to get your activity done faster because you eliminate the switching time.
Doing one activity at a time is not that bad. When you doing one thing and focus on it (without other distractions) you can save your time and you can focus on the thing you’ve been doing. After that, you can focus on the other. Which you can save your time from switching.
